A gym is a building system as much as an interior: floors that take dropped weights, air that stays fresh at full capacity, showers and locker rooms that stay dry and clean, and a space people want to come back to. We design fitness clubs, boutique studios for yoga, pilates and cycling, corporate gyms and home gyms in Seattle, Bellevue and Kirkland.

In Copper Hall the living plant walls run from the staircase into the fitness zone, which includes a gym, a small yoga studio and a massage room. Ascetic House, a 487 m² residence for a professional athlete, is built around activity and recovery, with a full spa zone and a 25-meter pool, and the Carpathian cottage community includes a large sports complex with a pool and spa.

Q&A

How do you stop gym noise reaching the floor below?

With impact flooring and, on upper floors, a floating floor system, plus acoustic separation of studios with music.

Do you design home gyms?

Yes, from a small training room to a full home spa with sauna and pool, as in Ascetic House.

Can a gym be part of an office?

Yes. Copper Hall has a gym, a yoga studio and a massage room inside an office building.

What ventilation does a gym need?

Ventilation sized for peak occupancy, cooling and humidity control, and continuous exhaust in showers and locker rooms.

Do you design pools and spa areas?

Yes, together with our swimming pool design service: pools, saunas, steam rooms and treatment rooms.

How long does gym design take?

Usually four to ten weeks, depending on the size and on how much of the building systems need to change.

Zoning and Flow

Members arrive, change, train and leave; the plan should make that easy and keep wet and dry zones apart. We separate loud zones for free weights and functional training from quiet studios, give the reception a view of the floor and plan the route from the locker rooms to every zone without crossing a training area.

Floors, Structure and Sound

Dropped weights and group classes are the hardest test for a floor and for the neighbors below. We specify impact flooring and, on upper floors, floating floor systems, and check the structure for equipment loads. Studios with music get acoustic separation so a cycling class does not drown out yoga next door.

Air, Temperature and Water

A full gym produces heat, moisture and CO2 quickly, so ventilation is sized for peak occupancy, with cooling for the summer and good control of humidity. Showers and locker rooms need proper drainage and continuous exhaust, and pools need dehumidification and materials that resist chlorine and moisture.

Nature and Light

Copper Hall brings living plant walls into the gym, and we use daylight, views and natural materials to make training spaces feel less like basements. Lighting is indirect over benches and mats, so nobody lies under a bright fixture, with brighter, crisper light on the main floor and softer light in studios and the spa.

Locker Rooms and Recovery

Locker rooms decide how members judge a club. We design them with enough space between benches, private changing options, good mirrors and hair-drying stations, durable and easy-to-clean surfaces, and connect them with the sauna, steam room and massage rooms.

How We Work

We start with your members, classes and equipment list, survey the space and its structure and systems, then develop the layout, a concept with renderings and the drawings: plans, floors, lighting, plumbing and finishes. For an office gym see also office design, and for pools swimming pool design.
