Cottage settlement in the Carpathian Mountains, Ukraine 2023

Amidst the picturesque Carpathian slopes in Ukraine, a project for a combined-living cottage settlement - for both permanent residence and seasonal vacations - was developed, even in the midst of war. Surrounded by extraordinary natural beauty, emphasizing simplicity in forms and silhouettes, harmony, and eco-friendliness in construction, this settlement serves as a refuge from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Let's delve into the history of this magical place's concept and see how it comprehensively embodies the principles of minimalism in every aspect of its existence.

Embracing Simplicity

The cottages in this community exhibit diverse architectural volumes while sharing a compositional and spatial structure. Ranging from compact one-bedroom houses to spacious three-bedroom cottages, all are designed for harmonious living in sync with the surrounding environment.

The settlement's structures include not only residential houses but also an administrative building, a restaurant complex with a conference hall, and a large sports complex with a pool and spa. Constructed using local natural materials such as thermally-modified wood and stone, the buildings embody minimalism through their simplicity and functionality.

For facade cladding and roofing, we used RHEINZINK patinated zinc standing-seam panels, which become even more picturesque as their surface ages unevenly over time, evoking the rooftops and domes of ancient cities like Lviv, Krakow, and Stockholm.

Each house is meticulously designed to optimize space and minimize costs during construction and ongoing maintenance, giving residents a sense of relaxation and carefree contemplation of the surrounding beauty.

The interiors boast clean lines, neutral tones, and a minimalist spatial structure, creating a calm atmosphere reminiscent of mountains, crisp mountain air, and swift mountain streams. Large panoramic windows flood the space with natural light, connecting residents to the enchanting beauty of the Carpathians.

Sustainable Living

The foundation of this community is built on the principle of sustainable living. Residents practice responsible consumption and rely on renewable energy sources - solar panels and rainwater collection systems - to minimize their ecological footprint.

Embracing permaculture principles, residents cultivate small organic gardens on their homesteads and engage in regenerative agriculture, promoting self-sufficiency and harmonious coexistence with nature. Water conservation techniques and efficient energy use are integral parts of daily life here.

Sense of Community

The community fosters a strong sense of camaraderie and mutual support. Regular communal gatherings, shared meals, and joint events form the foundation for deep connections among residents. The absence of excess material possessions encourages a focus on relaxation, relationships, and personal development.

Residents often organize workshops and skill-sharing sessions, allowing everyone to learn from others and develop new talents - a collective exchange of knowledge that creates a culture of continuous learning.

Nature's Playground

Surrounded by the majestic Carpathians, residents of this community have the privilege of immersing themselves in nature's playful embrace. The mountains offer countless opportunities for active recreation - hiking, mountaineering, and skiing, depending on the season.

Our cottage settlement project in the Carpathians is a testament to the strength of the Ukrainian spirit, creating something new even in times of war. Drawing aesthetic inspiration from simplicity, the cottages in our settlement have created a refuge where nature and human existence harmoniously intertwine.

In an era of rapid urbanization and material excess, this community stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating that sustainable living does not require sacrificing comfort. We hope this approach - simplicity, sustainability, and harmony with nature - will continue to inspire other communities around the world.
