In the Pacific Northwest an outdoor room is used for more months when it is designed for the rain as well as the sun. We design terraces, covered patios, pergolas, roof decks, outdoor kitchens and pool decks for houses in Seattle, Bellevue and Kirkland, as an extension of the living room rather than an addition to the yard.
At Lesnoe House a transparent attached pergola creates a space between the house and the garden, protected when necessary but visually open. Mansion for the Leader has a summer pool next to the house and a terrace with a barbecue area overlooking the pine forest and a pond, and the terrace of the house in Yuzhny carries the same light, calm language as its interior.

Q&A
Can a terrace be used in the rainy months?
Yes, with a cover, heaters and decking chosen for wet weather; a covered terrace in Seattle is used for most of the year.
Pergola, glass roof or louvers?
A glass roof keeps light in the rooms behind it, louvers give shade or cover on demand, and a solid roof gives the most protection.
Which decking lasts best?
Porcelain pavers and dense hardwoods last longest; thermally modified wood and composites are good options that need little care.
Do you design outdoor kitchens?
Yes: grill, sink, storage, power and lighting, placed close to the indoor kitchen and away from bedroom windows.
Do I need a permit for a covered terrace?
Often yes in Seattle, especially for raised or attached decks, roofed structures and roof decks. We prepare the drawings.
Can the terrace be designed with the garden?
Yes. We design terraces together with landscape design so paths, planting and lighting work as one.
