The team at LUMICENE, a French architecture studio, didn't just design a modular compact home for getting away from it all - they built it and installed it in the French Alps. The driving idea behind the design was unity with untouched nature, which meant creating a minimalist, tightly compact volume with only the furniture and fixtures that were genuinely necessary.

The centerpiece of the design is panoramic glazing built from aluminum-framed modules on sliding tracks, which can open the entire wall when needed, creating a fully permeable connection between the protected interior and the open mountain air, without ever leaving the house.
Why This Small Actually Works
Making an 18 square meter home feel spacious rather than cramped isn't accidental - it's a space planning problem, and a genuinely hard one. The exterior is clad in fir, chosen for its resistance to the region's weather; the furniture and interior surfaces are oak and felt, chosen instead for warmth underfoot and to the touch in a climate that's cold for most of the year. The module was assembled off-site in just a few days and installed directly on location in the mountains - though how long the material preparation itself took wasn't reported.
